Standing on your own two feet
Feeling Down, feeling depressed? Standing or sitting up straight can beat depression because posture has a direct impact on mood.
I’ve been saying it for years. Standing or sitting up straight really can improve you mood.
Try this experiment:
First, stand with your shoulder s hunched down, pull a sad face and stare at you feet…
Now try and feel happy.
Difficult isn’t it?
Now stand up straight, take a deep breath, put your shoulders back and put a big smile on your face.
Now try and feel sad.
Well that just proves my point. The right posture really can help you liven-up!
Sitting up straight boosted energy, enthusiasm, and attention in people with depression
This experiment is something I have tried many times with both clients and hypnotherapy students.
Standing or sitting upright can make you feel more alert and enthusiastic, less fearful, and higher self-esteem after a stressful task.
The benefits of the technique have been confirmed by Dr Elizabeth Broadbent of Auckland University in New Zealand.
Once in position, students had to give a five-minute speech, which would be judged, before counting backwards from 1,022 in blocks of 13. During the test, they were randomly asked to fill out surveys about their mood and how they were feeling.
Overwhelmingly, those who were sat straight had more energy and more enthusiasm. They also articulated themselves better and spoke more words.
Hypnotherapists and NLP aficionados have been using this technique for decades, but it’s nice to see that it has now been confirmed by academic analysis.
